Summer cinema screening - The Danish Girl
(Great Britain/Belgium/USA/Denmark/Germany, 2015, 119 min., director: Tom Hooper)
Einar Wegener is one of the best Danish painters of the 1920s; his wife Gerda gives him maximum support while trying to break through as portrait painter in her own right. The gradual collapse of their harmonious relationship starts through a trivial incident – when Gerda’s model fails to show up for a series of ballet portraits, Einar volunteers to sit in for her and puts on the ballet costume. This feminine act creates emotional confusion which he deals with by first playing the mysterious Danish girl Lili, but later realizes that he'll only be happy as a woman; and he'll do anything to become one. Gerda is finally breaks through as an artist thanks to her new muse, but also loses the love of her life.
