South Dakota, 1823. Experienced hunter-trapper Hugh Glass is with his son on an expedition with some trappers. Their journey includes facing hostile Indians and overcoming a merciless landscape full of pitfalls. Glass ends up getting mauled by an angry female bear and is badly wounded. When the hunting expedition then breaks up, two men, John Fitzgerald and Jim Bridger stay with Glass and his son. They wait for Glass to die so they can bury him and continue on. When he doesn't die, Fitzgerald decides to help him into the afterlife, but ends up killing Glass's son. Burying Glass, the two men disappear. But Glass climbs out of his grave, and it’s his desire for revenge and his hatred that keep him alive...
