Instead of doing time in a labor camp, he plays crazy and is sent to the seeming calm of a psychiatric hospital. His zeal for life and strong personality in the institute soon clash with the absolutism of Nurse Ratched, who, with three orderlies, tyrannically rules the entire institute. Biography

A director of Czech origin. Before emigrating in 1968 he made the films The Loves of a Blonde (Lásky jedné plavovlásky, 1965) and The Firemen's Ball (Hoří, má panenko, 1967). In America, his films included the Oscar-winning One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975) and Amadeus (1984).
