In 1940, Jules and his family move to rural Canada. The boy soon realizes that he and his uncle, the local mayor, don’t get along. He takes him to the attic room, where Jules settles in to his satisfaction. He discovers a dusty book about native Americans, which he then almost never puts down. It opens a completely new world to him. After being expelled from school for fear of his rare skin disease, his only friend is the dog Sparky. When he visits the local forest, Jules meets an indigenous girl named Asha, strikingly similar to the one from the recently discovered book. Isolated from the outside world, the boy is given the opportunity to embark on an adventurous journey through the Canadian wilderness to find Ash's Mesquaki tribe and cure his illness. The film is not only a picturesque tale of courage, imagination and unusual friendship, but also an excursion into the lives of Canada's indigenous people.
I Like Movies (2022)
Section: International Competition of Feature Films in the Youth Category (over 15 years of age)
Directed by: Chandler Levack
Canada, 2022, 100 min
Projection place: Golden Apple Cinema 2
Score:
The clear and distinct title of the film is the basic premise of the life of a teenager, Lawrence, who is obsessed with the world of film. His longtime and only friend Matt shares his passion for amateur filmmaking and other unusual hobbies. Lawrence's mother struggles to cope with the death of her husband and the difficult adolescent years of her son, whose dream is to get into NYU's New York Film School. Lawrence's selfishness, rage, and almost pathological desire cause fundamental cracks in his relationships. He sees the people around him only as pawns on his journey to become a world-class filmmaker. A great script full of references to film classics and outstanding acting make this indie film a favorite of film festivals. The script was based on the debuting director Chandler Levack's own experiences as a video store salesclerk and it has a cast of fresh young actors' faces.

Score:
“The woman is the man's servant”, she grew up with this sentence from her father, Lenia Friedrich's great-grandfather. How much has this way of thinking changed from today, where can you still discover parallels? Her hands testify to her hard work as a housewife, for which she certainly rarely received recognition. Of course, there was never any monetary reward for this, the father was the breadwinner of the family, although she did the reproductive work in silence. Lenia Friedrich would particularly like to focus on the quiet work in the background, which makes it possible to maintain the entire society at all.
