Projection place: Golden Apple Cinema 6
Score:
A journey through 50 countries: an ode to the beauty and subtle harmony of our planet. The series of captivating shots of different landscapes, almost entirely from above, presents current environmental issues (global warming, felling of rainforests, loss of biodiversity, depletion of natural resources, and migration of people). We start with the origin of the Earth and go from general statements to concrete examples with a list of alarming statistics. It also expresses optimism about the development of environmentalism, democracy and education.

They met on a Friday and got married secretly on Sunday. They fled their parents' wrath and spent their honeymoon among the cannibals in the South Seas, where they lost both their camera and their illusions. At the moment when many people would abandon filming, Martin and Osa Johnson risked their lives to bring the testimony of a diminishing wildlife. An authentic footprint of an era when filming in Africa was more dangerous than lions or malaria. Although they were celebrities admired by Chaplin and the British Royal Family, nowadays they are forgotten.

The Last Male on Earth (2019)
Section: Discover & Explore: Nature
Directed by: Floor van der Meulen
Belgium, Netherlands, 2019, 72 min
Projection place: Golden Apple Cinema 4
Score:
The last male specimen of a rare rhinoceros is surrounded by a human tragicomedy. There is only one male northern white rhino left in the world, and his days are numbered. His name is Sudan, and after 42 years on this planet he has lived his - and his species' - life to the very end. Protected from poachers by armed bodyguards around the clock, but also surrounded by journalists, tourists with selfie sticks, and scientists who are determined to find a way to reproduce him before it's too late. A difficult topic served in a light and elegant, but serious form.

India, 2018, 95 min
Projection place: Golden Apple Cinema 4
Score:
The lives of three friends on the threshold of adulthood are portrayed in the atmospheric light of dusk and dawn. Poetic sensuality contrasts with authentic scenes of everyday life in their Indian village, where care-free youthfulness comes face to face with merciless reality. The story´s protagonist is Bulbul, whose voice fails her when she has to sing in front of people. Fear of failure and self-doubt also plague the fragile Bonny, and Suman, who does not fulfil the traditional male image. The three teens are under the pressure of high expectations and strict moral codes.

Over the past few years, three handbikers have traveled through Iceland, Israel and Palestine. This time, Jiří Čeloud, Martin Matěj, and Pavel Přichystal head out on an adventure under the cruel African sun. Living five weeks in the saddle of a hand-cranked bike, having only the bare essentials with you in a backpack, sleeping in a tent or in the open, cooking over a fire - that may sound romantic, but after a week in the snow of the High Atlas, the participants recall the journey as a struggle with winter, time and self.
