A fairy-tale story about a village apprentice, Matěj who suddenly gains reason and decides to pursue the hand of Princess Pavlinka, whose father has just lost reason. Before Matej can win his princess, he must face several unpleasant encounters with the "immortal woman" Envy, who has spun her webs and controls almost everybody in the castle. However, with the help of Reason and Happiness, all obstacles are eventually overcome and Matěj and Pavlínka plan to marry. The tangled, seemingly complicated plot twists are untangled and even Reason finds reason.

This historic ballad is set in the mid-13th century, when robber knights attacked travelers on royal roads, while Christianity still fought against paganism, and human life had little value. Love, however, was still passionately potent. The title heroine is the virtuous girl Marketa Lazarová, predestined to a monastery. She's forced, however, to become the lover of a violent young man, Mikoláš, the son of the irreconcilable rival her clan, Kozlík of the Roháč's. Her love for Mikoláš causes Markéta to renounce her love for God, to whom she was originally promised.

The main protagonist is a clumsy and overweight teenager called Jitka Pažoutová. Her P.E. classes, run by the friendly teacher nicknamed Bohoušek, are pure torture for her. Things take a turn for the better when, during a dodge ball game, the girls win due to Jitka's "cannon shots", which are just impossible to catch. At a tournament, Jitka meets Honza Koubek. Even though he offends her at first, he apologies and convinces her to take advantage of her strength for the shot put.

When he falls in love with the beautiful Princess Slavěna, the magical stallion advises him to go to the royal court and pretend to be a mute gardener's helper. He remains incognito even after defeating the furious dragon that threatens the kingdom. This makes it possible for the insidious Black Knight to claim credit for saving the princess himself. The hero, nicknamed Bajaja, because of the sounds he emits as a mute, also rises to the occasion for all the following difficult tests…
