Ota Hofman (2018)
Section: Czechoslovakian Cinema: Ota Hofman 90
Directed by: Karel Smyczek
Czech Republic, 2018, 52 min
Projection place: Golden Apple Cinema 4
Score:
A documentary that maps the personality and extensive work of a pioneer in Czech children's film – recalling his contribution in a European context. It also clarifies the sometimes paradoxical circumstances around a series of famous TV series and films, e.g. the children's films The Singing Powder-Box, Johnny's Journey, Clown Ferdinand and the Rocket, and the series Mr. Tau and The Visitors. Ota Hofman recounts his story, as do his closest collaborators, prominent filmmakers, film historians, and his son, through whom we also learn much of Hofman's private life.

Vienna 1945: The powder keg of war and the Russian occupation as seen through the innocent eyes of nine-year-old Christine. She knows as little about peace as children today know about war. Bombed out and penniless, she and her family are put up in a fancy villa on the outskirts of Vienna. They now have a roof over their heads – nothing more. After the German soldiers capitulate, the Russians take over the house. Everybody is scared of the Russians, who are believed to be a capricious lot. Everybody, except Christine.

Director Bořivoj Zeman is a classic of Czech film fairy tales. Not only that - he's their founder. The fairy-tales The Proud Princess, Once Upon a Time, There Was a King..., and The Incredibly Sad Princess, became audience favorites. Who was this person who could provide us so much loving humor? And what could he have made and what did he want to shoot? Answers to these questions are provided by the documentary portrait by Zuzana Zemanová, who discovered many facts about her own father during her filming, things she had no idea about.

Czech Republic, 2017, 53 min
Projection place: Golden Apple Cinema 4
Score:
The composer Zdeněk Liška contributed the music to dozens of Czechoslovak films. His unmistakable writing was appreciated by film directors and they respected him as a co-author of their work. When composing for a symphonic orchestra, a brass band, the strings, or piano, he used all kinds of instruments, as well as electronics and sound effects. His music accompanies a number of classic Czechoslovak films. The portrait of the ingeniously diverse Liška responds to the current rising international interest in him.
Lucy - How to Live a Life (2018)
Section: Czech Films and TV Production
Directed by: Michal Herz
Czech Republic, 2018, 52 min
Projection place: Golden Apple Cinema 5
Score:
The portrait of a young woman struggling with drug addiction. We follow a charming and somewhat naive girl who, after drug rehab, decides to start a new life, finish high school, and organize her private life. We gradually see the details of her life: work in the porn industry, serious illnesses, nonfunctioning family and bad relationships, mental problems, suicide attempts and the development of psychosis. With her kind nature and spontaneous joy, she infects others with her optimism, but her problems wear her down and each fall is a little further than the last.
