This fabulous story about a mountain community is based on the rumors and fairy tales of this region and draws on the origins of these stories – the hard life of the people of the Giant Mountains. Something new arrived to these mountains at the start of the 1900s – skiing. And skiing is at the heart of this story whose main heroes are two little boys and their friend, a famous smuggler with all the qualities of the Lord of the Giant Mountains from fairy tales.

When the old bandit Ruffiano realizes that his son has grown into a nice but uneducated young man, he sends him to a monastery to be educated by monks, where he becomes a gentle young man. When his father lays on his deathbed, he promises to take over his trade. When his father dies, the young Ruffiano has a hard time; well-raised, he isn't able to rob anyone. Fortunately, he meets up with the woodcutter Drnec, with whom he ends up visiting a sultan looking to cure his princess. Instead of a cure, however, the princess "gets sick" in love with Ruffiano...

The main heroes are the two awkward devils, Popelák and Uhelák, who are sent out into the world as punishment by Hell's ruler; they have a month to retrieve a sinful soul. Their task isn't so easy at first; instead of guiding people to sin, they inadvertently help them. Disguised as farmhands, they find work on a farm and seem to be successful at last. The calculating farmer wants to marry his daughter Hanička to the vain landowner Kopyto. But Hanička loves Jan, and in order to have a happy ending, they'll need some hellish help.
