Normal Autistic Film (2016)
Section: Documentary Films
Directed by: Miroslav Janek
Czech Republic, 2016, 90 min
Projection place: Golden Apple Cinema 2
Score:
Children with autism don’t suffer from an incurable disease. They suffer because they are neurodiverse in a world set up for neurotypicals. With that perspective, the director embarks on a series of live meetings with a number of children and young adults who have been diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome. He gives them the opportunity to express freely their relationship with the world and with themselves, as well as what sets them apart from “normal”. We find that he’s brought us into the company of fun, fascinating people who often suffer because they are labelled as “disabled”. This excursion into the world of autism redefines the seemingly firm boundaries between “otherness” and normality.

The story of the first lady of animated film, who dedicated her life to children's productions. The film presents the internal development of the animation poetics of Hermína Týrlová, highlighting the aesthetic and technological problems of a number of experiments she was the first in the world to try. She chose her own themes for her work, wrote the scripts, and often produced the props. She tried a whole range of materials - from wood to plastic, wool, stone, modurite, fabrics and viscous pastries. The central line of narration is an animation style that brings her work closer to that of a child's world and it’s supported by the scenes of her animation works, which have been awarded at the most significant international festivals...

At the housing estate they call home, Jake, Kyle and Jarred hang around playing billiards, partying, smoking pot, watching porn, and talking about sex. They welcome anything that breaks the routine, even if it's a fight at the snooker hall – or a new neighbour such as the pretty Zara, a teenage girl who just moved into the estate with her younger sister. Standing at the window on the top floor, Jake can survey the whole housing block. Something about this place captivates him: the solitude, the isolation, the anonymity. In high contrast black and white, set to haunting organ music, the film portrays the life of a teenager whose increasing isolation takes on a sinister form under the burden of a secret he cannot tell anyone.
